The museum is located in the central part of Izmail in a small one-storey mansion of classical style - a monument of history and architecture of the XIX century. Its first inhabitants in 1899 were the Abraham family, whose head, Ivan Ioakimovich, ruled the city from 1909 to 1911. In the middle of the XX century the building housed branches of the National Bank of Romania, later - the State Bank of the USSR.

The museum was opened on November 7, 1947. The main museums of Ukraine and Russia donated especially valuable exhibits.

The museum occupies a significant place in a number of museums of the Odessa region and Ukraine in terms of the richness of its stock collections. The unique collection includes more than 35,000 items. It is based on collections that reflect the military-historical specifics of the museum - collections of uniforms and equipment of Western European, Russian, Soviet and Ukrainian armies of the XVII-XXI centuries. Part of the collection consists of materials handed over by soldiers of the Izmail border detachment - members of the ATO.

A special place in the collection is occupied by weapons represented by unique examples of cold steel and firearms of Western European, Eastern, Russian, Soviet origin. It covers the period from XIV to XXI centuries.

Part of the collection is related to materials relating to the period of the storming of the Izmail Fortress in 1790 - flags of the Turkish and Russian armies of the XVIII-XIX centuries, treasures of Turkish coins, nuclei, bombs, Turkish pottery found in the Izmail Fortress.The museum also collects works of battle paintings, graphics, sculptures, rare books on military history, as well as collections of other kinds: archaeological, numismatic, ethnographic, religious, documents and materials on the history of Izmail and the Danube region.

The museum's exposition is dedicated to the life and work of Alexander Suvorov (1729-1800), the participation of Ukrainian Cossacks in the Russo-Turkish wars of the last third of the XVIII century, and the Italo-Swiss campaign of 1799. One of the important accents in the exposition is the contribution of the commander to the liberation of the southern Ukrainian lands from the centuries-old Turkish yoke during the wars of the end of the XVIII century. The exposition of the museum is complemented by the diorama "The Izmail Fortress Assault". Alexander Suvorov Museum and Diorama are the one historical and cultural complex, which is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Izmail.
